Question:
Does anyone know if the Coleman "Mosquito Deleto" works? They were out
today for the first time this year. We in the NorthEast are expecting
another wave of West Nile Virus
Answer:
The technology has been in place for about 3 years. The main
competition is the mosquito magnet. See the link:
http://www.mosquitomagnet.com/ From everything I have read, this
technology really works.
The basic idea is that mosquitos find you through a plume of warm CO2
that you exhale. Both systems also use an attractant called octenol.
The similarities between the Coleman Mosquito Deleto and the Mosquito
Magnet are as follows:
1) both use a propane tank to create the heat and CO2;
2) both use the octenol attractant
The differences are:
1) The Magnet uses the propane to power a vacuum to suck up the
mosquitos / the Deleto uses sticky shields to catch them;
2) the Magnet propane lasts about 20 days for a 20lb tank / the Deleto
lasts 45 days (it doesn't use the propane to power a vacuum;
3) The Magnet models are $495, $795 and $1295 / The Coleman Mosquito
Deleto costs $199 at Lowes!
From what I can tell the basic technology really works. The real
question is whether the sticky tape on the Deleto works as well as the
vacuum system on the Mosquito Magnet? I bought the Deleto today, so I
guess I will find out. Considering the price difference, I am willing
to give it a go.
