Question:

I saw the "Mosquito Magnet" in an Airline magazine. If it really
works, this would give us back our back yard again, and save the cost
of building a screened in porch or gazebo.
I cannot believe they get $1200 bucks for this thing. It sounds
simple enough, platinum pellets and a propane tank to make CO2, then a
fan with a screen to catch the little buggers.
Can we figure out how to make one of these things ourselves?
Answer:
- Generally these things attract a lot of the little bugs, but who
wants to attract them. What you need is about a dozen of them placed in
a circle 50 -100 meters away from where you are so they will attract the
mosquitoes away from the center where you are and trap most of those
coming in from outside the circle. Now even home made that is going to
be expensive.
That is the same problem that the UV light zappers have. Sure they
kill a lot of mosquitoes, but the also attract many.
-The uv bug zappers attract lots of bugs, unfortunately, mostly just moths.
The mosquito trap does indeed work, I know someone who bought one and
virtually wiped out the mosquito and no see um's population in his and his
neighbors yard. They put it in the back corner of their adjourning property
away from their decks and pools and after a few weeks, the mosquito problem
was reduced to a point that even evening outdoor parties were possible.
