Question:
Does anyone have any tips on sewing mosquito-type netting? Any
sugguestions on what type of netting to buy? Here's the short version on
why I'm asking.....We have a 10x10 Quik Shade canopy type tent. I want to
add "walls" to it but must admit that I'm having a hard time finding exactly
what I want for the price I want to pay. I know that I can buy netting at
the local fabric store. I also have an idea of how to piece it
together....BUT I would love to hear tips, hints, horror stories, etc. on
working with netting.
Answer:
-My brother-in-law sells mosquito tents premade. I don't know if he'd give you
advice but his prices are reasonable. His URL is:

-The first thing that comes to my mind is to enclose the edges in a fabric.
This would be similar to the concept of enclosing seam allowances of art-wear
clothing in bias binding. I think a straight grain binding would be more
stable.
-I have sewed with the very fine mosquito netting and found it fairly
manageable. It does tear easily so keep seamrippers and the like off the
sewing table! I made a 5 sided playpen cover for my brother's firstborn so
the little gaffer could sleep in it while camping without being eaten alive.
I measured the top (LxW) and sides 2x(HxW) and 2x(HxL) and cut these of
netting. I then folded over the edges of the netting twice, incasing the cut
edges and attached these to cotton strips matching the playpen quilt I'd
made, using the cotton strips to "Frame" the netting on all 4 edges of each
side. An elastic casing around the bottom of the whole thing and it was a
simple, effective pullon cover.
