Question:
I'm headed to Roatan next weekend, and I'm starting to pack my
gear for this trip. I have one question: where does one find
insect repellent which contains DEET? I've read repeatedly that
this is a must-have on Roatan, but I have no idea where one would
buy this stuff.
Answer:
-cutter's is (I think) 30% DEET. REI sells "jungle juice" which is
100% DEET, which is not good on the skin and is recommended mainly
for tick country. any backpacking store will have some kind of DEET
repellent.
-When you find DEET, be careful not to spray any on plastic items. It
melts plastc........
-Most brand name repellents will have DEET in it. Just look for the
active ingredient on the side of the container. Just a note: You don't
have to go overboard on the % of DEET in the product - anything over
%30 is over-kill. Also, DEET will not repell the mosquitoes away from
you -- they will still swarm around you. Rather, DEET is an insect
neuro-inhibitor which interferes with the mosquitoes ability to land on
you. Bottom line - they will fly all around you, but they won't bite.
