Question:
Here in SW Ontario we are very concerned about West Nile virus this
year as it has been identified in many of the NE United States and is
expected to cross into Ontario this summer. I was talking to my coach
today and she was recommending the addition of 1 tbsp dried minced
garlic twice a day in the feed to act as fly/mosquito control. My
coach says she has her horses on this regimen and they have way fewer
fly/mosquito bites than in previous years. She also commented that a
new horse into the barn in the last couple of weeks that had not
previously been on garlic and when he was turned out with the herd,
came in with severe bites on his body/sheath where the rest of them
had maybe one or two....has anyone on rec.eq been using garlic for
fly/mosquito control and if so, what are your experiences with it?
Answer:
I use "Wendal's Herbs" dried minced garlic for my three year old chestnut
filly and it seems to help. Flies just torture her and she gets welts from
reactions to fly bites. We don't have as many mosquitoes as flies, but the
West Nile Virus is supposed to reach Georgia late this summer. I also use
it to clear up any weepy eyes or coughs, and it usually does the trick in
one feeding. This brand is particularly good; I would eat it myself! I
have used powders, etc. in the past but like this best.
