Question:
We're considering scraping together a few dollars to buy either one of
the above units so that we can enjoy some of our property in the
evenings. The Mosquito Magnet was the "original" version of the CO2
trap and the Mosquito Deleto (by Coleman) seems to be a knock-off. The
base units of both versions claim to cover 1/2-3/4 acre. The Coleman
unit is small when compared to the MM. Both operate on the same
principle of attracting mosquitoes with CO2 (generated by a propane
tank) and an attractant (Octenol). However the MD is *significantly*
cheaper than the MM (~$200 compared to ~$500).
I know some people here considered the MM when it first came out -- has
anyone done a comparison between the two models? Is there something
significant I'm missing? Otherwise, they appear to be equivalent except
for price (and size). Also, if someone has either unit, is it
effective? I read lots of positive testimonials from golf club grounds
crews.
Also, has anyone tried the Thermocell? It's a gadget that you clip to
yourself which expels mosquito repellant. It costs $20 but I wonder if
it's any more effective than plain old DEET based repellants.
Answer:
-We have a mosquito deleto and it is worse than worthless.
1. It doesn't work, it catches practically nothing, 3 mosquitos a day
in an area that is thick in them. We have three lakes and lots of
trees. Stand still and 20 to 50 will be around you in a minute or
so. I think the mosquitos it caught just bumped into it by
mistake.
2. It has three consumables. Gas, adhesive trap, scent cartidge.
3. It uses a fly paper type of trap that will get covered with dirt
and if it worked would quickly get covered by mosquitos, but it
doesn't catch mosquitos so that really isn't a problem ;-(
4. It has a stick of scent that you have to replace regularly.
5. It comes with one or two worthless repellents canister that have
two consumables 2AA batteries and a repellent cartridge. It does
nothing more than sell batteries and repellent refills.
Ours came built as a fire hazard and without a 20lb tank adapter.
They have instructions on how to reassemble the thing with less fire
risk and will send you a 20lb tank adapter for free. So even after
you buy the worthless thing you have to wait for more parts before you
can use it on a 20lb tank.
-IDK about either of these, but what about that one they advertise on
television that was "developed & used by the U.S. Army"? Never tried it but
your description mad me think of it
