Question:
I just purchased a plant called "Citrosa- mosquito plant". It smells
strongly like citronella, and is supposed to help repel skeeters. It didn't
offer any other growing tips... anyone out there have more info?
Answer:
-"he scented geranium plant , Pellargonium sp., more commonly known as
the Citrosa "Mosquito Fighter" plant, has little proven merit and
further research is needed to demonstrate any mosquito repelling
qualities that it may possess. "
"A commonly perceived mosquito deterrent is the Citrosa plant which
was created by crossing tissue cultures of an African Geranium with
the Grass of China. The Grass of China contains citronella oil and
has been used for years as an active ingredient in mosquito repellent
candles. No studies are available to support the idea that the
Citrosa plant actually repels mosquitoes. In fact, some researchers
believe that the only way the Citrosa plant can release the Citronella
oil is if the plant is touched or disturbed."
"Imagination is more important than knowledge"
-I bought some "Citronella" type mosquito repellent things you attach to your
clothes. They have the scent of the plant you refer to and they do not repel
anything but other people. I watched mosquitoes light on me wearing 2 of
those things. I should have wrote the company and told them to stop selling
crap and give me my $2 back. haha But I'm a wuss.
