Question:
my son, 14, is very allergic to mosquito bites. No, he hasn't been to an
allergist. We're between docs and have no insurance right now.
He goes camping with scouts summer and winter. and is a mosquito magnet.
even with repellant on, he'll still get a few bites.
Ffrom about age 8-12, he wasn't so bad. Then it was bad. so we used
benadryl, and caladryl. and someone recommended cortizone cream. then about
age 12-14 he seemed to be building immunities to the bites. But now it's bad
again.
Here's what happens. The bites swell up so huge, his finger was swollen twice
normal size, for example. And he says it hurts. Plus he just feels yukky, a
kind of malaise, I guess you could call it. No tongue swelling or anything
else we've noticed. Usu his arms and hands hurt the worst. He says it Feels
best under cool water.
Benadryl of course that makes him sleep longer so he hates that. I think in
the beginning that worked. Then began losing effectiveness. Now after several
summers we've come to this. I'm at my wit's end and he'd welcome suggestions
too. What do you recommend we do?
I've tried adding to the benadryl some anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen or
aleve. but if there's something OTC, over the counter, or something else you
recommend, let me know. thanks. tess

Answer:
-Figure out some way to get medical care for your son, even if it means
taking charity. You are playing around with his life, here.
-I may be wrong, but I don't believe fatal reactions have ever been
reported due to anaphylactic reactions to mosquito bites. I also don't
believe that desensitization has ever proved of value in preventing
reactions as described above.
